What is it all about?

In 2004 the Australian government announced that 2007 would be officially known as the Year of the Surf Lifesaver, the first time a community-based organization has received such an honour.

The Year of the Surf Lifesaver (YSL) marks the 100th anniversary of Surf Life Saving in Australia. YSL acknowledges the fundamental role surf lifesavers play in keeping Australian beaches safe and in the formation of Australian beach culture

The YSL mission is to engage the Australian community in recognizing the contribution of the surf lifesaver in the past, present and future and, to maintain the relevance and sustainability of Surf Life Saving.

YSL Style Guide

All clubs now have access to the YSL logo and style guide.

To download the YSL style guide click here

For the YSL logo click here and download your preferred format from the YSL list.

When using the YSL logo please follow the style guide supplied, which provides rules around use on items such as stationery and signage and the use of the logo with club logos.

A hard copy and CD of both the YSL and SLSA style guides will be sent to clubs as part of the YSL club kits later in the year.

We encourage all clubs to use the YSL logo during 2007 to promote Surf Life Saving and our centenary.

By following these guidelines it will ensure that we are all united and enhance the overall promotion of Surf Life Saving and YSL to the community.

If you have any questions regarding use of the logo then please contact the SLSA marketing department at ysl@slsa.asn.au

Some of the website additions you can expect to see very soon are:

  • A full calendar of National and State events
  • The option for surf life saving clubs to enter in their YSL events,
  • State based YSL web pages
  • An extensive resources section including the logo style guide, fact sheets, posters, and document templates

But in the meantime read on to find out more about the planning of the YSL celebrations.

    The YSL Logo

The Year of the Surf Lifesaver logo was launched recently to club presidents who attended the President’s Dinner during the International Lifesaving Conference in Geelong on 18 February 2006.

All of the dinner guests received a cap displaying the YSL logo after watching a presentation given by the SLSA president Ron Rankin AM, launching the logo and kicking of the countdown to the YSL celebrations.

The logo symbolises the celebratory nature of YSL which is captured through the stylised images of the water, the iconic red and yellow surf lifesaving flags and the sun, which all come together in the form of a human figure – a surf lifesaver.

The celebratory image, over the existing Surf Life Saving logo, is indicative of the unity and future positive direction of Surf Life Saving, following on from 2007 – YSL.

All clubs will have access to the YSL logo style guide which will provide you with guidelines and directions of how and where you can use the YSL logo at a club level to promote your events and celebrations locally. By following this guide we will continue to ensure a unified approach to YSL.

    Celebrating ‘100 years of heroes’

The Australian Government has announced 2007 will be the ‘Year of the Surf Lifesaver’ (YSL) to recognise the centenary of Surf Life Saving in Australia. To celebrate this honour an extensive array of celebrations and commemorative events is being planned across the nation. To find out more about Surf Life Saving’s history over the past 100 years, check out the SLSA history page .

Every Australian will have the opportunity to be involved in the Year of the Surf Lifesaver, from simply attending events, making a donation, purchasing an item of memorabilia or playing a more significant role by becoming a member of surf life saving club. All of those involved will be a part of a high profile, multifaceted event which has extensive opportunities for other groups to get involved especially community organisations and businesses.

If you or your organisation would like to get involved or find out more about the opportunities during YSL then contact the Project Manager, Paul Bruce ysl@slsa.asn.au

    The YSL mission is:
To engage the Australian community in recognising the contribution of the surf lifesaver in the past, present and future and to maintain the relevance and sustainability of Surf Life Saving.

Five key drivers have been identified to ensure that YSL leave a significant legacy for the future of surf lifesaving in Australia.

  • Awareness
To increase public knowledge of the historic role of surf lifesavers in the development of Australian Culture and to promote awareness of Surf Life Saving’s key capabilities and challenges

  • Authority
To consolidate our position as Australia’s leading water safety and rescue authority with all relevant stakeholders

  • Surf Safety Education
To ensure that all school children have access to basic surf safety tools by introducing surf safety education programs in all Australian primary schools

  • Membership
To increase recruitment by extending an open invitation to all Australians to join the volunteer surf lifesaving community and to improve retention rates by creating a heightened sense of value within our current membership

  • Income Generation
To create a financial legacy for the future of Surf Life Saving through fundraising, sponsorship and cause related marketing

The Year of the Surf Lifesaver Project Team

A 2007 Year of the Surf Lifesaver Project Team has been formed to oversee the development of the YSL program. This team includes the SLSA President Ron Rankin AM (Chair), the SLSA CEO Greg Nance, the YSL Project Manager, Paul Bruce, state representatives and other key staff covering the areas of membership and marketing and communications.

The team meet every 6 weeks to report on the progress of the event and to discuss any new ideas or possible programs which may enhance the overall program to achieve the five YSL key drivers; awareness; authority; surf safety education; income generation and membership.
